George W. Jarecke
George Jarecke combines years of experience teaching writing with a broad range of legal practice. With a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina, he is also an accomplished writer.
He is the coauthor of two books. The first was Confounded Expectations: The Law’s Struggle with Personal Responsibility (Carbondale Ill: Southern Illinois University Press 2000). That book was a finalist for an award from the ABA as the best nonfiction book of 2000. The second was Seeking Civility: Common Courtesy and the Common Law (Boston: Northeastern University Press 2003). Professor Roger Abrams, former dean of Rutgers Law School, wrote about the latter, "The prose is fluid and accessible, an uncommon skill among lawyers....This is a study by experts that will be enjoyed by everyone."  The books were written for both the legal professional and the lay public. George Jarecke is also the author of numerous book reviews and short fiction.

He taught English composition and literature at Auburn University for six years.  He served on the committee that managed the freshman composition curriculum, choosing texts and designing writing assignments.  He also taught business writing and creative writing.  He has taught writing in adult continuing education programs as well.


George graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law and has worked for twenty years in both private practice and as in-house counsel. After working as a trial lawyer in private practice, he was Associate Counsel of SAS Institute, Inc., one of the nation’s most profitable software companies. He also was an Associate General Counsel of AIG, then the world’s largest financial services company, where he managed all U.S.-related litigation for the affiliated life insurance companies. Most recently he was Of Counsel to the Seattle intellectual property firm of Steiner Norris PLLC, where his practice was mainly transactional. He is a member of the Washington, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina state bars.
